Seal
A sample of each shampoo would go into a sealed vial, with nothing added or filtered.
Drop 001 · Personal Care
A planned independent screening program for shampoo — the follow-up to the 136-product study we announced in March 2026. The planned method would sample the air above the liquid and use an instrument to identify volatile compounds.
Screening has not started. The in-house lab is still in build-out, and no lab results are published.

The story so far
In March 2026, TPR announced plans for a 136-product independent shampoo study across mass-market, baby, salon, celebrity, medicated, textured-hair, and store brands. The target panel is designed to cover roughly 95% of the US market, with zero brand sponsorships.
How the planned screening would work
01 Seal
A sample of each shampoo would go into a sealed vial, with nothing added or filtered.
02 Warm
Gentle heat would drive volatile compounds into the air above the liquid — the headspace. That air would be sampled.
03 Read
The instrument would separate the vapor into individual compounds. Anything notable would require confirmatory testing before any report could go public.
What a future flag would mean
A reason to run confirmatory testing on that sample. It would be the start of an evidence trail, not the end of one.
What a future flag wouldn't mean
A safety verdict. Any future report would state what was measured, in which sample, with the method printed next to it.
The in-house lab is still in build-out, and this headspace method has not been validated yet. Any future result would need to meet the confirmation standards in our methodology.
How we plan to testEvidence tiers
Lab backed
An instrument measured this exact product sample. The method is shown with the result.
Source backed
Grounded in regulatory or published third-party data covering this product or its source.
Label only
What the manufacturer discloses. Useful — and clearly marked as unverified.
Insufficient data
When we don't know, the report says so. No score dressed up as knowledge.
Every product report in the app carries its tier, so you always know what's behind a number.
